Lenses
Once the power of your lenses have been determined and prescribed by the Optometrist, we will discuss with you the best way to interpret this, taking into account your prescription, vision needs and your lifestyle. As an independent practice, we are able to of offer our patients the best range of spectacle lenses from all leading manufacturers. This includes both branded and unbranded options. We are also a Nikon Lenswear consultant.
There are many different lens options available. Below is a guide only. If you have any questions about the best lens option for you, please phone or call into the practice where we will be happy to help.
Single vision – A lens for just one prescription or focus – for example for distance or reading. A wide field of vision as whole lens is the same prescription.
Bifocal - a lens for two prescriptions or focuses. Normally distance is at the top of the lens and reading is in a shaped segment at the bottom. Common segment shapes include round, D shape and E-line.
Anti Reflection Coating – This is a coating applied to the lens surface which reduces the amount of light bounced off your spectacle lens as a reflection. This means more light passes through the lens giving a brighter image and a better contrast. In real terms, it can result in less tiring dazzle when driving at night, improved screen clarity on a computer and overall visual comfort. The coating also improves the cosmetic appearance of the spectacles allowing the person looking at you to see your eyes and not a reflection. Some of the more modern branded coatings such as Crizal Forte by Essilor and SeeCoat by Nikon also offer a 2 year guarantee against scratching.
CR39 – This is the standard material that spectacle lenses are made of. This material is not suitable for rimless frames.
Polycarbonate / Airwear - 12% stronger and tougher than standard CR39 lenses. This material is also thinner and 30% lighter than standard lenses too. Without the need for extra coatings, the material itself offers 100% UVA and UVB protection. This lens type is ideal for children as well as adults.
Photochromic / Transitions / React-To-Light – we recommend Transitions as our brand of choice for photochromic lenses. It is a lens that has a colour / tint that varies with the light conditions you are in. Indoors the lenses appear clear but once outdoors the lens turns quickly dark, reducing glare and improving contrast. This can avoid eye fatigue, eye strain and squinting. They also offer full 100% UVA and UVB protection. Remember UV rays are a threat even when it is cloudy.
Thinner lenses – if your lenses show outside your frame edge or feel heavy on your nose, you may want to consider thinner lighter lenses. There are several stages of thinning and most come with an anti-reflection coating as standard. Please call us to discuss the right

Varifocals (multifocals) – A lens with multiple / varying focus points. This lens type normally has the distance prescription at the top and slowly changes through to intermediate vision and then down to reading vision at the bottom of the lens. There are lots of different qualities of Varifocals on the market. Budget versions tend to have a narrow corridor of vision, therefore reducing the width of vision while the better lens designs reduce lens distortions and maximise the field of vision.
