National Eye Health Week 2025: Why Your Vision Matters

From 22–28 September 2025, the UK will be celebrating National Eye Health Week, a nationwide campaign that highlights just how important it is to look after our eyes. Good vision is something many of us take for granted, yet so much of our daily life depends on it — from learning and working, to enjoying hobbies and spending time with family.

Why Eye Health Matters

  • Early Detection: Regular eye tests can spot early signs of eye conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts, as well as wider health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure — often before you notice any symptoms.

  • Preventable Sight Loss: Half of all sight loss in the UK is avoidable. Detecting problems early and accessing treatment can make all the difference.

  • Overall Wellbeing: Your eyes are closely linked to your general health. Taking care of them can protect your independence, confidence, and quality of life.

Tips for Healthier Eyes

Looking after your eyes doesn’t have to be complicated. Small changes can go a long way:

  • Get Regular Eye Tests – Even if your vision feels fine, regular check-ups are essential.

  • Protect from UV Rays – Choose sunglasses with proper UV protection (UKCA or British Standard mark), and remember to protect children’s eyes too.

  • Eat a Healthy Diet – Dark leafy greens, colourful fruits and vegetables, and oily fish all provide vital nutrients for healthy eyes.

  • Quit Smoking – Smoking is a major cause of preventable sight loss, as well as other serious health problems.

  • Stay Active – Regular exercise supports circulation and overall wellbeing, which benefits your eyes too.

  • Take Screen Breaks – If you spend lots of time on devices, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

How to Get Involved

  • Follow Online – Keep up to date with advice and news by following @myvisionmatters on X (formerly Twitter) and @NationalEyeHealthWeek on Instagram.

  • Explore Resources – The National Eye Health Week website has free resources, posters, and leaflets to help you share the message.

  • Spread the Word – Talk to friends, family, and your community about the importance of regular eye tests.
